Summary
The master of the school has an overwhelming power over the events that happen around the trapped. And that power is even greater on a certain day: her birthday.
I'm guessing the author finally realized just how deep the plot-hole was that he had dug himself into. Funny how it required an exposition dump in the form of a letter to move things along to the next story-arc.
